anna didenko: ukrainian symbolist
Anna's thoughts on art
“Female beauty gives more space for manoeuvre of imagination. Men are more reserved by nature and the emotional nuance is harder to extract and render. Being a woman myself, it helps to project the ethereal sentiment of the moment in a life of my heroine onto a canvas.”
“Symbolism as a movement in art and literature renders reality through metaphorical means, symbols and tokens of era, culture, religion. I find realism too harsh and limiting, while symbolism allows tons of space for interpretation and refined gradation of the emotional spectrum.”
“I keep experimenting with medium. Everything handmade is such a therapeutical escape from the fast-paced world. I recently took up ceramics – this hobby literally saved me from one of the deepest depressions in my life. But the lows in a life of an artist are the biggest inspirational triggers. Not only did I return to drawing after a few years but I am also discovering sculpture now.”
“Having grown in the village, I have a strong connection to the traditions and culture of central Ukraine. I make faceless motanka dolls myself with my daughter Yaryna for meditative purposes. Even though they belong to pre-Christian times, they are deeply rooted in the Ukrainian culture as the amulet and guardian of the household.”
“In the era of mass produced everything, hand-made singular pieces and specifically art becomes a necessity for anybody who can afford it. Even more so, for those who can hardly afford it, but still do.”
